How eBay fees work in 2026

Most US sellers pay two fees when an item sells: a final value fee (a percentage) and a per-order fee of $0.30 for orders of $10 or less, or $0.40 above $10. The percentage is charged on the total amount of the sale, which eBay defines as the item price, shipping and handling the buyer pays, and sales tax. That is why fees often feel higher than the headline rate.

The calculator covers every category eBay lists separately. Rows marked "total" apply one rate to the whole sale; the others charge the lower rate only on the part above the threshold.

Fees that can be added

  • Promoted Listings (general): the ad rate you choose (2% to 100%) on the total sale, including shipping and tax, if the item sells within 30 days of a click on your ad.
  • International fee: 1.65% of the total when the buyer is outside the US and you are not using eBay International Shipping.
  • Below Standard seller level: eBay charges "an additional 6% on the final value fees" (7% after four consecutive months). eBay does not give a worked example; the calculator applies it as 6% of the total sale, the commonly reported reading. A "very high item not as described" rate adds 5% in affected categories; only one of the two applies.
  • Insertion fees: 250 free listings a month, then $0.35 each (not included in the calculator).

Common questions

Does eBay charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The final value fee is calculated on the total amount of the sale, which includes shipping and handling the buyer pays. If you offer free shipping, there is no fee on shipping because the buyer pays none.

Does eBay charge fees on sales tax?

Yes. eBay's definition of the total amount of the sale includes sales tax, so the percentage is applied to it too. That is why the calculator asks for the buyer's tax rate.

Is an eBay store worth it for the lower fees?

A Basic store costs $27.95 a month ($21.95 on a yearly plan) and lowers the most common rate from 13.6% to 12.7%. That 0.9-point saving covers the Basic fee only once you sell roughly $2,400 to $3,100 a month in those categories, before counting the extra free listings.

Do I get eBay fees back on a return?

When a sale is cancelled, the final value fee is credited. For partial refunds the credit is proportional to the refund. The per-order fee is usually not credited.
